Meet the tutor

Hi, I'm Alicia MYers.

I’m a private tutor and former classroom teacher, and I work mainly with students who need clearer explanations, more thoughtful feedback, and a calmer place to think.

My background is in English and Humanities education, and I’ve spent the past nine years teaching students from early secondary school through university preparation. I support essay writing, reading comprehension, source analysis, revision planning, and subject confidence more broadly.

I became a tutor because I kept meeting students who were capable, curious, and trying hard—but were getting lost in speed, pressure, or a teaching style that simply didn’t fit them.

In lessons, students can expect patient explanation, direct but kind feedback, and enough time to understand not just what to write or say, but why.

Who the lessons are for

Support for students in very ordinary, very real situations.

Tutoring is not only for students in crisis. Sometimes a student is doing “fine” on paper but still needs a better way to think, plan, and work.

Students catching up

For learners who have missed key concepts, fallen behind on coursework, or need a more manageable path back into a subject.

Students preparing for exams

For students who need help revising, structuring written answers, remembering content, or approaching exam tasks more confidently.

Students improving study habits

For learners who understand more than their notes, homework, or revision routine currently show.

Students rebuilding confidence

For learners who need a quieter space to ask questions, make mistakes safely, and begin feeling more settled in the subject again.

How tutoring works

A clear process, without a rigid programme.

I use a structure so families know what to expect, but the content of the lessons adapts to the student. If a plan needs to change, it changes.

01

Short consultation

We begin with a short conversation about the subject, current concerns, school expectations, and whether online or in-person lessons would be a better fit.

02

Learning assessment

I use discussion, recent schoolwork, and a few low-pressure tasks to understand the student’s strengths, habits, and areas of difficulty.

03

Personal lesson plan

We set practical priorities rather than vague goals. The plan may focus on exam technique, reading and writing structure, subject knowledge, or all three.

04

Regular lessons

Lessons combine review, explanation, guided work, independent thinking, and a short recap so the student knows what was learned and what comes next.

05

Progress updates

Families receive clear updates about what has been covered, what is improving, and what would be useful to continue practising between lessons.

Subjects & pricing

Everything important, including the fees.

No hidden costs, no “starting from” pricing, and no pressure to buy a block of sessions.

Extended Lesson

In-person lessons take place at my home office near SE Hawthorne, or at a public library by arrangement. Online lessons use video call with a shared digital whiteboard. Payment is due after each session by card or bank transfer — I don’t require packages or upfront payment for multiple sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Practical details before you get in touch.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons are available online or in person in Vancouver. The most suitable arrangement depends on the student’s location, schedule, and learning preferences.

Usually a laptop or desktop computer, a stable internet connection, and a quiet place to work are enough. A headset can help if the student shares space with others.

If a lesson is cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, it can usually be rescheduled without charge. Short-notice cancellations may still be charged unless there is illness or an emergency.

I invoice after each session, payable by card or bank transfer within five days. There’s no package requirement or upfront commitment — you can stop at any time with no penalty.

Yes. Where useful, I provide lesson notes, practice materials, revision prompts, or planning sheets as part of the lesson fee.

Yes. Parents or guardians can receive brief progress updates, especially for younger students. I also want students to have enough room to speak honestly about what they find difficult.

Lessons are conducted professionally and with clear boundaries. For students under 18, scheduling and key communication are handled with a parent or guardian. Online and in-person settings should always be appropriate for safe learning.

We discuss the student’s year level, current challenges, subject goals, preferred lesson format, and any immediate concerns. It is an information call, not a sales pitch.
